When a senior loved one has a form of dementia, there is a significant impact on the entire family. The disease slowly robs a person of their memory and independence. As it progresses, family members become caregivers and supporters. The emotional toll that the situation creates can lead to feelings of grief even though their loved one is still alive.
Anticipatory Grief and Memory Diseases
Anticipatory grief is the grief that occurs before a great loss. For loved ones of an older adult with Alzheimer’s or dementia, this grief can last many years as the disease progresses. Here are a few ways to cope with a sense of loss while providing care or support to a loved one with memory impairment.
Join a support group
Caring for a loved one with a memory disease is different than other types of life-limiting illnesses. Caregivers often feel a strong sense of duty when it comes to taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. By connecting with others who are walking the same path, you might find peace & comfort. If you think this may help you, check around for virtual or in-person support groups in your area.
Practice good self-care
This can be a tough task if you’re already overwhelmed, but taking care of yourself is vital when you are a caregiver. Ensure that you’re eating well-balanced meals, getting enough exercise, and sleeping well. Utilize meal delivery services, virtual exercise classes, and any other tools you need to manage stress and take care of yourself.
Make time to go out
When you’re a caregiver, days can be hectic and stressful. But, self-care includes getting out of the house and socializing. Whether it’s to grab a cup of coffee with a friend or to take a quick yoga class, find time to do things outside of your home and re-energize yourself.
Schedule a few days away
If your loved one is in the care of a memory care facility or another family member, schedule a few days away so that you can take a break. In a memory care center, your loved one will receive care and support around the clock – allowing you to tend to your own well-being & responsibilities while knowing they are in a safe, supportive space.
